What makes a professional camera better than a regular point and shoot?
Right now I have a Canon PowerShot A630 8.0 megapixels. It’s a great camera, but I really want a camera that will take professional quality pictures, very clear.
I thought that megapixels were what made a camera better or worse than another, but based on previous answers I guess it’s not? Then I heard about SLR? I’m very confused about all this.
I just want a good camera that takes pictures of great quality and was thinking about the Nikon D40. I already have a good camera, so if there is a camera that is just okay, it’s not worth switching.

DSLR camera give you more freedom than a regular point and shoot camera. They also tend to have more bells and whistles. Thing is you have to learn how to use all the bells and whistles if you want to actually know how to use as opposed just hoping for the best. You can take really good pictures with a point and shoot camera and it does a lot of the work for you, but there are some that give you some control back, you just have to learn how to use it.
One option you might want to consider is getting some photo editing software and see if that helps you polish your pictures up some. There are several programs out there and some claim to be able to give you professional quality photos so it’s something to look into.
Benefits of getting the software first (if you’re not sure about getting a new camera) is that you can see if you’re able to get the effects your looking for with the combo of your current camera and the software. If in the end you decide that you still want to get a DSLR camera you can still use the software to edit your pictures with both cameras.
The other thing you might consider is going to your local library and checking out some books on photography technique. Someone once told me that a more expensive camera doesn’t necessarily mean a better picture. And professionals are professionals because they learned about techinque and how cameras work so that they could better achieve the effects they were looking for in their pictures.
I guess what I’m saying is that if you don’t understand the basic techniques and principals of taking photos a DSLR camera really isn’t going to make that big of a difference.
