Yashica Electro
My Yashica 35mm Electro (first model) wont let me put in my film?

Hi there! So I’ve just received my new Yashica 35mm Electro (the first kind) from a seller on Etsy.com. And the problem is, I cant get the film Rewind Knob to pop open like my other cameras, therefore, I’m not able to get my film to even fit inside. I’m not sure if its the fact that I need a battery FIRST, then it will open (because of the battery) or the fact that it’s simply jammed..? I really hope not, I got the whole camera to open (the back) but yea, I can’t seem to pop open the rewind knob. here’s a picture of the item I purchased: http://img3.etsystatic.com/il_fullxfull.201774803.jpg

PLEASE HELP ME!

Yashicas are neat cameras, they have quirky, unique design features that reduced cost of manufacture but still resulted in decent quality cameras. One such feature on your Electro is that the rewind knob does not pull up like most cameras. It is static. Instead there is a notch cut in the bottom of the camera below the rewind knob shaft. Simply insert your film cassette at an angle into the back of the camera so that the male part of the cassette fits into that notch, angle, up and in! That’s all there is to it.

A couple other points about this and vintage cameras in general:

1–I don’t recommend buying cameras off Etsy because the people who sell them on there usually know absolutely nothing about vintage cameras, they just think they look cool. Yashica rangefinders can be a little tough to find at retail outlets but these are the best places to buy them until you gain some more understanding of how to asses their functional condition. KEH.com, CollectibleCameras.com, and CameraRepair.com are three good places to start.

2–Cameras like this rely on the battery only for the light meter and some for the shutter if they have an electronic shutter. This is part of their merit. No camera ever made relies on the battery for the movement of the rewind knob.

3–Read instruction manuals. They can be a bore but you will learn how to use the camera correctly. Simply type in the model name (the complete model name) and the word “manual” into Google and you’ll get plenty of results with most cameras, particularly popular ones like the Electro series. The Butkus manual website is the most popular and perhaps largest.

4–If you find that the rangefinder is dim, cloudy or just difficult to focus through, you will probably want to have the camera serviced by a professional. KEH.com can do that if you don’t have a local repair shop that will take this kind of camera. Rangefinders (meaning the view system) need to be cleaned and calibrated every several years in order to stay accurate and bright. Most people using vintage rangefinders are running around with dim views of their subject and often missing the focus because they haven’t bothered to read about their cameras and take care of them properly. Have fun with your Electro for a while but be sure to keep it in good working order after you’ve fallen in love. It’s a great camera and deserves your care.

Good luck with your Electro! I have several Yashica cameras and really love their smart design and sharp lenses.

MANUAL AND METAL! FILM FOREVER!
