Nikon FM2 rust removal ?
Hi all,
I have a Nikon FM2 which has some spotty rust around the chrome base near the film winder.
Is ther any way to remove those rust on the chorme surface, and what kind of paint I should use once the rust is removed ?

Getting paint to adhere to this type of surface (which can be either chrome or anodized) can be tricky.
A simple shot of an epoxy based enamel (which you can find at your local hardware store) may provide adequate coverage.
You may want to rough the surface and clean the rust off around the area with a very fine steel wool (“000″ which is fine). Don’t get too aggressive with the abrasive and only work the area that needs it.
An alternative to the paint is a thin layer of epoxy resin over the affected area (a skim coat if you will) to protect the metal from the elements.
Whichever you decide please use caution and apply these things sparingly. You don’t need overspray or epoxy drips getting into the film door or in the rewind mechanism as you will surely create a problem much worse than some localized rust.
My best advice is to take your time and if you’re comfortable doing it, remove the baseplate from the camera entirely.
The other option is to look on eBay for a used FM2 body that is in non-working condition to canibalize the parts from it. Of all I’ve listed, this is the most recommended.
